Why I'm hosting a Feast for Freedom

When the news is full of so much violence, war and destruction all over the world, I don't want to become cynical and forget that humans are capable of so much more. Connection and community are the best antidotes to feeling cynical, isolated, or powerless. I decided to host a Feast for Freedom to bring some friends together to connect, share delicious food from many cultures, and raise money for the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre (ASRC).
The ASRC provides support to people who have had to flee their countries of origin. This includes advocacy and legal aid, food and material aid, healthcare and social services, and education, training and employment support.
The ASRC also speaks up for human rights, including an end to offshore detention and provision of permanent protections. I know I'm not alone in wanting everyone's fundamental human rights safeguarded, and in despairing at regressive and repressive steps being taken by governments.
We'll draw from some inspiring and special recipes gifted by refugees and based on their own cultural traditions. Every dollar we raise will go to the ASRC so they can provide essential food, housing and health services to refugees and people seeking asylum.
Please make a donation to help me reach a fundraising goal of $750. Donations $2 and more are tax-deductible.
Thank you, wonderful fellow humans!

What I’m cooking
Monday 20th Apr Ben and I are planning to cook Palestinian musakhan rolls (gf and wheat versions probably), Sri Lankan kari kulambu masala lamb curry, and chai cake. All are in the Feast for Freedom cookbook https://d3io0xt4rxsdiy.cloudfront.net/ee0505d13d3790a8d34d07a2ce02566f.pdf Share
Plans for the Feast
Wednesday 18th Mar We have space for about 10 adults to sit dinner party style at a long table on the deck, plus space for kids and teens to come and grab some food and then hang out where it suits them. It would be great if each guest or household can bring a dish to share. Your choice - food from your own cultural background, your favourite recipe, or something from the ASRC 2026 recipe book https://www.feastforfreedom.org.au/cooks-and-recipes, featuring Palestinian and Tamil dishes along with yummy recipes from other cuisines.
